Lost Over $10,000 Swindle Hits Cheese Firms
A man posed as a Livingston & Co. representative and bought summer cheese outputs from several Wayne area factories. After shipments totaling about $10,000 reached Columbus, the swindler disappeared. Canton December 24 It is reported here that George Matteson the New York agent for Berger Manufacturing Company of Canton has been arrested in Buffalo. Matteson is alleged to have absconded with 10 069 of the company's money. He had been in Canada but came to Buffalo to see a friend. Also notices probate and executors for local estates and marriage licenses issued to Canton area residents.

A Wheeling & Lake Erie train derailed at Bigger's curve near Warrenton on Thursday afternoon. Engine man Jesse E. Houghton of Massillon was killed instantly. fireman Haynes of Ironville was badly injured but survived. Houghton, 30, married, lived on South Erie street and was described as careful. The wreck occurred while assisting a heavy train. investigators blamed excessive speed on the curve. The body was taken to Norwalk for burial after services at his residence.

Big Horn committee to carry gilded horn to Canton
A group led by Robex Hale Stanton Lyons Williams Blanchard began November 16 a trek from Decatur Illinois to Canton bearing a 30 foot gilded tin horn weighing about 100 pounds. They aim to reach Canton by January 1 with $1000 in hand to present the horn to President elect McKinley. They have already raised $850 by Mt Vernon and expect Massillon next.
