A Norfolk-like roundup from Navarre Richville Newman and nearby towns reports heavy hog butchering as winter sets in. Markets will fill with smoked sausages and pork cuts while a 480 pound hog leads a season’s largest yields. Local notes include new arrivals, burns survivors, births, and community events across Crystal Spring Richville and Newman.
James Weidmer and spouse have settled in the village. Lawrence Fohr shows improvement after coal mine injury. State Representative Metzger plans a bill to abolish township road supervisors in Stark County and create a county road commissioner paid from county funds and answerable to township trustees. He may also redraw Perry township to exclude Massillon, facing drafting challenges. Pollock likely to propose asylum management and labor measures and will consult miners in January. Wilhelm says no current bills and defends conservative stance. Warner seeks bartender licensing.
Thieves blew the Massillon Paper Company safe on Walnut Street and rifled the contents, while Warwick & Justus’ safe at East Tremont Street was found unlocked and unused. The Massillon safe held about $3 in small change and papers, with insurance policies and a Cleveland bank check missing. Fifteen workers were on duty. no one saw the burglars and the explosion went unheard until early Friday. The Warwick & Justus safe contained only books and papers and was left intact after the break-in.
A Wheeling and Lake Erie freight train of eighteen coal cars derailed on Rexford hill near Jewett when a flange broke on the third car. The car tumbled down the embankment but the rear cars rolled forward and rejoined the front. None of the tracks were damaged and the accident puzzled crew as they described the odd sequence and the unexpected persistence of the train.
A live pigeon shoot between Thomas Temple of Canal Fulton and Harry Foltz of Massillon at Fulton on January 1 will be for 25 dollars a side. Additional live bird and clay bird contests are planned nearby. A shooting tournament is set for West Lebanon at Christmas with five hundred live birds secured.

A final settlement is set for Monday Dec 23 with multiple former owners to assess liabilities.
Massillon man George W Thomas sues Minnie E Thomas for divorce on grounds of gross neglect of duty. They married December 21 1899 at Massillon and have no children. Trial opens January 6 1902 in Stark County common pleas court after adjournment sine die. Attorney Arthur H Kaley filed the petition.
Several boys, cousins named Ax, played with a loaded revolver on Pleasant View Wednesday. It discharged accidentally by a son of Jacob Ax, injuring his cousin who lives with Mr. Ax. Surgeons cannot locate the bullet. the wound is serious.
