Liverpoo l Aug 21 Michael Maybrick, brother of the man sentenced for Mrs Maybrick's murder, says he did not place Alice Yupup in his brother's house to spy on his wife. He opposed a conviction, believed an acquittal possible, and prepared to go to London before the verdict. Meanwhile a Socialist conspiracy is alleged in Austro-Hungary with arrests in Lemberg and others expected.
An early morning explosion at the St Muller refinery in lower Allegheny sent a wall of flame over the complex. One worker, Watttuit Ehass, was thrown twenty feet, severely burned, as fire crews battled the blaze. Two other men, including the engineer William Miller, are missing and feared dead.
