General MacArthur's force of about 4,000 men advanced five miles beyond San Fernando and defeated a Filipino force of about 6,000. The enemy retreated with many dead and wounded. American casualties were about 20 killed or wounded. The report, dated Manna August 9 at 12:25 p.m., notes a decisive U S victory with heavy Filipino losses.
Plattsburg report quotes Secretary of War Root after visiting the barracks. Washington August 9 The Italian embassy secretary Romano reports three Italians, the Difata brothers Joe and Charles and John Cerami, were lynched after a clash with Dr Hodges in Talulah Louisiana. Two others, Frank Difata and Joseph Feducio, were killed earlier as the mob acted in three distinct phases. The remaining Italian men, including Cerami, were arrested but later killed by the mob.
Dr. Carl Middlebranch recounts a typhoid fever case followed by acute mania with recovery. The Massillon quarterly session of the Union Medical Association of Northeastern Ohio adjourned early for attendees to catch trains. A large turnout heard talks on subsumed judgment chemicals and cerebro spinal meningitis. New members admitted include J. F. Campbell East Greenville A Walker Leesville and J F Gardner West Brookfield among others from Cleveland Canton and Akron.
Admiral Dewey exchanges visits with Naples army corps commander as Vice Admiral Gonzales hosts a brilliant reception. Dewey pledges duty over fetes and a luncheon is planned in Rome. Conference notes hint at party lines and Van Wyck influence in a Democratic gathering.
In Atlanta a Populist state conference resolved to run on its own slate next year at state county and municipal levels and declared against fusion with other parties. The meeting underscored independence and a distinct platform within Georgia politics.
New York reports Mourado Jahonah who killed his wife in Hoboken last May hanged himself in his Jersey City jail cell, ending a pending murder case.
