Canton July 31 1900 G A R veterans from Guernsey county 350 strong visit Major McKinley. He salutes their loyalty to the Union and notes progress in tin plate, praising Republican policy and pledging continued support for veterans pensions in strong currency. Also: Ohio Miners' Convention called by President Ratchford for August 11 in Columbus to address wage scale enforcement and the lease system with about 1000 delegates over three days.
Work to begin immediately on the Warwick Block with John Meinhart securing the contract. An addition forty feet long will extend the postoffice room to ninety feet. Massillon Postoffice to operate under Yale lock and call box system after Sept 20, improving public access and extending hours.
The Massillon Trades and Labor Assembly authorized a committee to urge the city council to accelerate the Navarre street railway project. The panel, Frank Dibell, Wm. Brown, and William B. Sailer, would press Canton Massillon Company to honor its bond and reveal plans or forfeit bonds to attract investors. Delegates also admitted to membership the Massillon Musicians' Protective Union, set Paklau park for Labor Day, and called an Aug. 13 open meeting to organize retail clerks outside saloons.
Ohio case against Dr. J H Sanderson for theft of a $300 promissory note was dismissed by Justice Sibila. The judge found grand larceny not proven though Sanderson had the note and altered it after return. Witness testimony largely supported previously reported statements. A second Cleveland dispatch reports a fatal shooting during a strike at Brown Hoisting Works as unrest continues and reinstate promises are questioned.
Distress noted by Mrs. Martin Seifert and others after a distant relative reported the murder of Mrs. Kate Miller near Louisville. Chief details confirm Edward G. Miller shot his wife in a Greenville township kitchen then killed himself. The cause centered on religious differences and an intended marriage between Caroline Miller and Frederick H Bushwald. Coroner Starr ordered an inquest.
Jesse Wilson faced Mayor Schott on a charge of assault with intent to kill after nearly taking his wife Ella Wilson’s life. He pleaded guilty to the assault, claims no intent to kill, and was jailed to await trial. Ella Wilson remains in critical condition with a fractured rib indicating prior abuse.
Mrs Caroline Uebernickel aged 60 on Earl road lies in critical condition after a Sunday night assault by an unknown tramp in a neighbor's yard. Sand blinded her eyes and packing forced into her mouth as she begged for mercy for her children before being left unconscious. She was later escorted home by friends.
Notice of the death of William Bamberger aged 30, oldest son of Mrs Anton Bamberger, of Massillon. He worked for Shriver & Sons of Cincinnati and died in Memphis from sun stroke while supervising a steel frame erection. Interment will be in Cincinnati. relatives plan to travel there tonight. He leaves a wife and one child in Cincinnati.

The report links a Canton carriage meeting, Whitney’s gold-standard stance, and Hanna’s diplomacy as the campaign unfolds. In Massillon a husband, Jesse Wilson, is under arrest after allegedly attacking Ella Wilson in a South Erie Street home. Ella, found with throat wounds, remained alive though severely injured, while neighbors and police pursued clues and noted the suspect's jealousy and drinking.
A Christian Endeavor Good Citizenship meeting debated Sunday law enforcement. The committee vows an aggressive stand against open saloons and Sunday baseball, urging police to enforce the mayor's proclamation and close unlawful Sunday venues. They warn officers against conspiracies to defeat the law and call for citizen cooperation.
Ohio Governor Bushnell will reach Massillon on August 7 with Canal Commissioners Sleeper Aldrich Crowley and Williams and state boat from Akron. Rep Austin says the group will also likely go to Canton to see Mr. McKinley. A public reception is being considered as the governor’s first stop in Massillon.
