Pittsburg July 21 labor leaders and Amalgamated Association officers debated J P Morgan proposed terms with two factions. Conservatives led by Shaffer Williams and Morgan favored cautious acceptance, while radicals urged tougher terms, leaving editors and workers uncertain about a timely settlement.
In San Francisco on July 31 the City Front Federation and its 14 unions initiated a general walkout affecting about 12 000 members. Approximately 3 000 workers are abroad until they return, while the strike applies to San Francisco labor only upon their arrival. The federation includes Sailors' Union of the Pacific and local longshoremen along with marine firemen and several other trade groups.
All major shipping companies except one left without a union crew after a long standing deal with the Pacific Coast Steamship company kept firemen aboard. Coasting steamers and a schooner went to sea while officials say the strike defies sympathy and is a stand against the employers’ push to crush unionism. Disturbances include a serious shooting affray as Front Federation risks broader participation and city business could stall.
Bath Maine on July 31 reports state Miss Ruth Hanna will christen the new cruiser Cleveland at Bath Iron Works in September using water instead of champagne. Many builders and owners in Maine are abstainers or prefer water or flowers. past christenings included white blossoms or pigeons. Next Thursday in Thomaston a four masted schooner will be christened with water from a Maine spring due to the owner’s objection to wine.
Chicago reports Paul Morton estimates the national corn crop around 1.5 billion bushels as drought does not ruin overall yields. Kansas and Oklahoma show exceptionally large wheat crops of good quality. Topeka notes more rain and suggests a third to nearly half a corn crop may develop with improved forage prospects for next season.
Washington July 31. A Salt Lake interview cites a Sampson letter dated May 20 1898 allegedly suppressed by the navy department. The letter overrules Long and keeps Havana Cienfuegos as the main holding points to threaten munitions bound for Cuba. Schley published the letter to the senate committee. Long says he had not seen it before.
Washington July 31 A navy department letter from Admiral Kimberly asks to be excused from the Schley court of inquiry citing heart trouble. Secretary Long in Hig ham Mass will decide. Schley has answered the precept. letter mailed by his counsel Monday night but not yet received by yesterday afternoon. The SUF position says Secretary Long may have taken it with him on departure. The letter reportedly comments on the fifth Specification of the precept and suggests actions.
Bishop John Moore died at his St Augustine home after a long illness, surrounded by Florida priests. Funeral planned from the cathedral on Friday.
Louisville and other Kentucky towns report heavy rains from Monday night into Tuesday morning easing the drought. Despite late timing, the rainfall benefits tobacco and late crops. In the corn belt rains were lighter but fell where most needed across Ohio Indiana Tennessee Missouri Iowa Nebraska and Kansas. Temperatures remained around 90 in the west and 95 in Washington.
Northbound Chicago Rock Island Pacific passenger train No 2 from El Reno derailed two miles south of Kremlin Oklahoma after a broken rail washed out by heavy rains. One man W L McLain Enid Okla killed 24 others injured with serious wounds.
Connellsville Pennsylvania July 31 A letter from Mrs Hawkins widow of Colonel Alexander Hawkins Tenth regiment says she and her daughter Jessie will be here today as guests of honor at the regiment reunion This will be her first appearance at any event honoring her husband s regiment since his death.
General Leonard Wood the military governor of Cuba arrived in New York on the Morro Castle from Havana accompanied by Mrs Wood and their three children. They will tour on a yacht and his children will go west.
The Mail and Express reports several conferences in three weeks between representatives of the Pennsylvania and Gould interests. A possible disposition of the new Wabash line into Pittsburg and a close working agreement among systems could prevent the rival road’s construction. A Missouri Pacific traffic arrangement with the Pennsylvania system as an eastern outlet is assumed.
Cleveland July 31 Mayor Johnson expects state board of equalization to hear his bid to raise railroad tax valuations across Ohio by 500 million dollars. Hearing set a week after notice. board already raised Cleveland Electric Railway tax by nearly eight million. Lawyers to appeal board action to circuit court.
Pittsburgh July 31 The Carnegie Lower Union plant on Twenty ninth street saw thirty skilled workers in nine and twelve inch guide mills refuse to work after the discharge of Patrick Frey a rougher. Strikers claim Frey was fired for union activity and expect Lower Union and possibly Upper Union mills to strike by week end. The action threatens wider plant walkouts and jeopardizes pending peace negotiations with Morgan.
At the Pan American Bible Study congress in Buffalo on Monday July 31 Dr. R A Torrey of Moody Bible Institute spoke on Bible Normal Colleges. J M Pullman was to present on Large Miscellaneous Classes but was absent. Delegates discussed the topic. A W Tialsey of the Presbyterian Board of Missions spoke on The Bible in its Relation to Missions.
Washington reports a cable from Prince Ching describing an imperial edict dated July 24 1901. The board of foreign affairs is created to supersede the six prior boards with Prince Ching as supervisor and Chu Tung Chi as president and associate minister. Wang Wen Shao Hsu Shou Peng and Lien Fang named senior and junior vice presidents.
New York reports that Germany probably holds all details about the Allegheny’s detention at Cartagena and Abel Murillo’s arrest. Emil Boas says he took the facts to the Hamburg American home office, while the German consulate in New York says no official report has been received. The Colombian consul general sent all information to the Colombian legation in Washington.
Postoffice opened on Guam with Conrad directing the creation of the first facility on the island. Located at Guam as the chief point, the office ranks as fourth class and Antanasio Tartano Perez is appointed postmaster.
In Youngstown on July 31 a warning of a general strike looms as 1500 furnace workers in the Mahoning and Shenango valleys threaten to stop iron production. The move follows reported pig iron sales to United States Steel by the Bessemer association. Turnagemen say they act under Federation of Labor directives through their union.
Curran July 31 reports a British column near Nqueta on July 28 endured an all day fight with a Boer commando. Four hundred Boers repeatedly assaulted the position, Major Edwards and Gunner Carpenter were killed, the Sixty-seventh field battery limbered up and fled three miles under heavy fire. Five British soldiers were killed.
Reporters were barred from the Bissell block where the Amalgamated Association held its meetings. Detectives guarded the door as pickets refused questions. A national officer said no news on conference progress could be released for two days.
Local firm tightens grip on potato market causing steep price rise. Price jumped from $3.20 per barrel yesterday to at least $4.00 per barrel today, reflecting market cornering and scarce supply in Cincinnati.
The City Front Federation orders a general strike of fourteen unions totaling about fifteen thousand members. Three thousand work at sea or away, and the order excludes them until return. If extended, major shipping firms lose union labor, fuel and oil deliveries halt, coal reserves deplete in two weeks, and lighting could fail after dark.
