The Letter is in the French ambassador’s hands and Spain will object to any cession of the Philippines. General Merritt is in Manila and Chief Aguinaldo may incite trouble.
The port of Fonte surrendered to Commander C. H. Davis with no resistance as American forces arrived. General Miles and General Ernst’s brigade moved toward Ponce, which capitulated that afternoon. American troops pursue toward the mountains to join General Henry at Yauca, with heavy Porto Rican deployment planned. Ponce, a principal Porto Rico port, hosts 35,000 to 40,000 people and multiple civic buildings, warehouses, and gardens. Yauca lies at the southern foot of inland mountains with about 9,000 residents.
The Massillon Retail Grocers Association met Wednesday afternoon and decided the fifth annual picnic will be held August 10 at Chippewa Lake. Tickets set at 50 cents for adults and 25 cents for children with rail fare via C L&W. A military band, dancing, and varied sports including a grocers vs butchers baseball game were planned. Stores urged to close on picnic day. Russell & Company workers seek more flags and a display of national colors to honor war events with flags from many nations and Stars and Stripes.
Thomas C Brown, manager of the Military band, is soliciting cash subscriptions as the band gains footing and compares favorably with state bands Yet it lacks sufficient support and seeks funds for uniforms and equipment Citizens urge the city council to create an annual maintenance fund of at least 500 to match neighboring cities and bolster the Massillon band Wrights Celery Tea is recommended for liver and kidney regulation and constipation relief.
Orrville July 28 Jacob Bair committed death by own action morning before daylight by cutting his throat. He planned to go to Cleveland today for examination after long illness. Mr Bair had lived in Orrville forty years and was quite wealthy. He leaves a wife and several grown children.
Plans for dividing the Vaart Estate near complete as Zoarite members weigh separate existence. Most old members fear ruin from splitting while about one third may withdraw. Zoar will stay intact with hotel brewery and store under current management. Younger members back dissolution alongside continued finances.
Canyon July 29. Stark county commissioners appoint Ephraim R. Pickens treasurer to fill the vacancy after Geib’s death. Pickens, Washington township resident and late deputy, to bond $375 and receive one sixth of net office fees for Geib’s term ending September 5. He plans to assume Monday.
Stock holders of the Elm Run Coal Company met at J. F. Pocock's office to fill vacancies on the board of directors and elect officers. Directors elected were W Schafer of Cleveland, C A Suhr of Cleveland, James A Wilson, J Haring and J F Pocock of Massillon. Schafer becomes president, J C Haring treasurer, and Pocock secretary. Directors later toured the Elm Run and Pocock mines.
Superintendent Hohe and Architect Sperry of Sykesville Md visit Massillon asylum to inspect departments and discuss cottage plan expansion. Right of way negotiations near settlement. Massillon faces slight project delays. new fire equipment arrives. Evans Company to start five cottages and office buildings with bids under Meyers & Co.
The will of late County Treasurer Jacob Geib filed for probate names Lydia Geib executrix with Emma and Sivilla as residuary heirs. The estate remains separate for the daughters with life interest, then divided on death, with survivorship rules if a daughter dies childless. Other probate items include bond for Ephraim Pickens as Treasurer, estates of Jacob Barr and Reason Frey, guardianship for Lillian Failer, and marriage licenses for Canton and Navarre couples.
John McCane, rejected for county infirmary director on the Democratic ticket, is circulating a petition in Massillon seeking 100 signatures to gain a spot on the Australian ballot as an independent candidate. He has nearly reached the requirement and predicts a surprise outcome in the forthcoming showdown.
Miss Maggie Froman, 21, of West Brookfield, drowned when a skiff capsized on Turkeyfoot lake Sunday. Three friends were saved by Massillonians Harry Wilhelm and Emmet Hile who battled heavy waves to lift survivors aboard. The rescue occurred near the southwestern shore as others struggled in soaking garments, and the body’s recovery followed hours later.
East Greenville Aug 1 The third incendiary blaze this season swept four center town buildings early Sunday. McGinnis residence and contents were ruined. Boyd saloon residence on the west side also burned. Edwards saloon residence on the east side consumed. J H Howells Co store east of Edwards building ruined. Loss about 12000, most insured. Villagers could only stop spread. no wind aided containment.
