An explosion at the governor general's palace in Havana on April 24 caused dust, falling plaster, and roof damage. A printer in the captain general's office was wounded as walls collapsed. authorities attribute the blast to insurgents or supporters, sparking great excitement.
Louisvile April 20 Robert Laughlin jailed at Maysville for the murder of his wife and niece has confessed to additional killings. He reportedly admitted killing his invalid wife and assaulting and killing her niece before setting fire to the house. He awaits trial on these charges amid penitence and terror.
Frankfort Kentucky April 29 Governor Bradley pardons Judge J H Pulliam of Breckinridge county who was sentenced to 17 years for killing a home despoiler named Miller He had served seven years and his wife later admitted guilt in a letter to the governor Newport News Virginia April 29 The old Dominion line steamer Wyanoke collided with the United States cruiser Columbia sinking in 30 minutes Several crewmen were injured and the cruiser sustained minor damage
Fourteen people were injured when a Central train carrying the state G A R encampment was wrecked by a washout just east of Raymond. None of the injuries are serious.

In Montgomery two Republican state conventions met. The McKinley group backed sound money protection and a straight ticket led by General J M Burke of Jalhoun. The anti McKinley faction rejected such stances and favored fusing with the Populists to name the governor candidate and divide the rest of the ticket.
Republican reports Senator Teller is willing to lead the Republican delegation to the St Louis convention but may not be bound by its actions if it opposes silver. Also notes a separate incident in Butter Kentucky where deputy sheriff B F Finnell shot his son-in-law Austin Stevens, injuring him in the hip and leaving Stevens in critical condition.
