Silk sales last week soared with thousands invested in silks, led by new warp print monotone silks at 1.25 and rich novelties from 1.00 to 2.00 a yard. Black brocade damas silks offered at 75c to 1.00, plus 2000 yards of plain white habutai silks at 35c, with samples available on request.
In Havana the crowd watched as five condemned Cubans, called murderers and incendiaries, were executed in a hollow square. The public executioner bungled each hanging, causing slow strangulation and prolonged cries as Ruiz fled the scene before the final death.
In New York on April 1 officials and industry figures questioned a reported pooling agreement among United States steel manufacturers. Carnegie Steel representative A R Whitney denied any pool and called the claim unlikely, noting only an imminent $3 per share rise in steel billets. The Southern Coal and Iron Company was cited as confirming a joint eastern selling agency with Tennessee Coal and Iron linked to the arrangement. prominent iron and steel men were expected in the city to discuss potential coordination for mutual gain.
