American observer M H Jackson describes wartime London from Trafalgar Square with crowds at Buckingham Palace and rumors of White Star Line ships seized. He notes hunger, cash shortages, lodging trouble, police movement, and anticipation of a long war while promising future diary extracts.
Minerva Beets a Marshfield raised Holstein won senior and grand championships at the Milwaukee State Fair after being sold to R E Hager of Algonquin. The cow produced an average 22.28 pounds of butter weekly and had a storied milking record.
Judge Park presided over 46 candidates granted citizenship at Grand Rapids on Saturday. Among new citizens are 19 German born, 6 Norwegians, 5 Austrians, 5 Hollanders, 3 Prussians, 3 Swedes, 2 Canadians, and one each English Swiss and Danish. J Graham Sibson at the Methodist church and liturgical devotions at St John’s Catholic church. St Alban’s Episcopal will conduct Holy Eucharist with printed prayers from the La Crosse diocese, while Evangelical St Paul’s will offer services in German and English with a harvest home festival. Presbyterian services include Let Us Have Peace in the morning and a 4:30 vesper with a keynote on The Cause of All Strife, followed by a Christian Endeavor meeting.
