Obituaries recount the deaths of Arthur H Reese a Marshfield volunteer helper died of influenza and pneumonia aged 30 and Cleveland Kingsbury a Wausau businessman and community figure who died of pneumonia at 28. A car driven by Jacob Hamm overturned on a Holway to Medford return trip Friday evening killing Albury Hamm and John Wansinger and injuring Miss Skidmore and Mrs. Hamm. Albert Hamm was to be examined for military service. Mrs. Hamm suffered a broken shoulder. she and others were treated locally with varying outcomes as of late reports.
George Cardinall of four miles west of Withee was hospitalized in critical condition after falling 32 feet into a well he was digging. His ankles were broken and internal injuries reported when a rope broke while pulling him toward the top. The accident occurred about 5 30 p m Saturday as he finished work and he was brought to the hospital by night train.
A fuel mix up at Marzh where kerosene and gasoline were swapped in deliveries led to several autos being filled with the wrong product. Mrs Becker suffered a kitchen flare up while Henry tried a fire test, but oil inspectors recovered the misdelivered stock and vendors refunded damages, restoring normal business.
Washington reports daylight saving advocates drop the year round law as clocks will be set back one hour Sunday October 27 Senator Calder of New York had secured winter time from the senate and asked House supporters not to press the proposal for now The move ends the bid to keep winter time permanently and lines up with standard time this year
Marshfield oversubscribes its Fourth Liberty Loan allotment by about 33 percent. With railroad subscriptions pending, the city may raise around 540,000, aided by 1200 subscribers and strong local committees. Other towns in Northern Wood County also exceeded quotas, including Cameron, Lincoln, and Rock, with relief for late entrants through Friday.
Jesse and Albert Dorst, picked up by Neillsville guardsmen during the Krueger incident in Clark county, have lived in the county jail since. They were taken to Camp Grant Wednesday with Sheriff C. N. Gowrling. Registered at Wausau for service but then left town with no address, delaying their medical examinations and questionnaires.
The eighth annual Wisconsin Breeders Association sale was held Thursday October 17 at the big round barn on the fairgrounds. Forty six head of purebred Holsteins sold to local farmers in Wood Clark and Marathon counties with an average price near $100 per head. Auctioneers were Col Love of Waukesha and Col Wm Krause of Thorp.
Mrs. Fred Peiper is in critical condition after an auto accident near Loyal and Wax. She says she and her husband stopped at Riplinger, returned home, and when he reversed the car her clothing was caught in the wheels, throwing her beneath the vehicle with a broken neck and little chance of recovery.
A troop ship carrying American soldiers to the fighting front in France consumes three thousand tons of coal or twelve thousand barrels of fuel oil each voyage.
Wisconsin faces a major drop in usable anthracite for the year ending March 1919 with most of the curtailment in stove and net sizes. Consumers may need to substitute egg coal and break coal to fit ranges, as demand cannot be fully met. Federal Fuel Administrator W N Fitzgerald urges public aid and practical steps to adjust consumption.

Mayor Henry Kalched urges generous citizen aid for Minnesota forest fire sufferers. He appoints a relief committee of R. C. Hastings Leo Rose I. P. Tiffault Adam Paulus and F. J. Jordan to collect and forward contributions to the Governor’s relief committee. Dated October 18 1918.
Ernest Mathews of Company A 127th Infantry and brother of Mrs Louise Crosson is returning to the United States after being severely wounded in France. In a base hospital letter he describes a leg amputation near the ankle and knee, healing progress, hope for an artificial leg, and plans to visit family and repair old Fords upon return.
The Woman's Committee of the Council of Defense asks every ward to gather old papers magazines and related items for the Salvation Army fund. Ward captains list contacts Mrs Robert Connor and others to centralize collection. Citizens are urged to save and submit all paper products to aid in paper production and wartime needs.
In letters from World War I service members, First Lieut Wallie Mueller writes from Bordeaux September 28 noting hospital stay, injuries to knee cap, plans to return in June, and missives home about Nantes and mail delays. Walter Nelson reports health, wartime action, and thanks his mother for support, describes fighting Hun forces, capturing tech from the enemy, and longing to return home as the front continues.
