Patrick W Harkin obituary recalls Civil War service and family ties
Patrick W. Harkin died last Saturday of muscular heart trouble. Born in Toronto April 15, 1841, he moved to Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, and served in the 17th Wisconsin Infantry under Sherman. He later settled in Marshfield, Wood County, surviving by his wife and five children, with many relatives attending his funeral at St. John’s church. The Catholic Knights of Wisconsin and G.A.R. honored him, and pallbearers included Joseph Kasberger and Michael Gruber.

Julius Zettler, 25, a farmer from the Kremberg farm north of Hewitt, died after a premature dynamite explosion while preparing to blast stumps. He left a wife and child. funeral was at Hewitt Lutheran cemetery. The accident stemmed from him carrying eight sticks of dynamite with caps in his hands when one cap exploded, injuring him fatally.

Police officer Jacob Kuntz ordered order or closure, Hammer was arrested after a second disturbance. In municipal court Hammer pled guilty to drunkenness and disorderly conduct, fined $50 with $4.30 costs. Two other men present were fined but claim innocence, Hammer repaid their fines. Council hearing on Thursday may address both saloon cases amid public sentiment for accountability.
