Precautions in testing corn germination speeds

A Wisconsin Farmer notes an Ohio test showing slower germinating corn yielded more per acre than faster germinating seed. From 150 ears, the first ten germinated fastest yielded 63.71 bushels vs 66.90 for the slowest, a 3.19 bushel advantage. Variation in kernel hardness and hull may affect water uptake. Farmers should study germination with care and avoid discarding tardy seed too quickly.
