Marshfield’s Rise From Fire to Modern Hub of Wisconsin

A 1905 retrospective recounts Marshfield’s 1887 devastating fire and swift rebuild led by Major Upham. It details destruction of Upham Co operations, citywide mobilization, aid from neighboring towns, and rapid post fire growth including schools, libraries, utilities, and new brick business blocks establishing Marshfield as a key Wisconsin center. The piece notes the 1889 electric light and waterworks, the Marshfield Light Infantry, and ongoing expansion that earned the city the title hub of Wisconsin.
