Cross Examination Faces Mine Workers Leader Testimony
The mine workers leader said about forty or fifty deputies were paid by coal companies to enforce protection in Laviein county. He described lawlessness and a reign of terror with crowds dispersing on order and strikers being beaten. General Wilson pressed why the county did not pay the sheriffs, while a Plymouth mine worker spoke of being ignored by a local justice of the peace. The commission heard days of intimidation and boycotting testimony, with concerns about coercion and fear of bodily harm.
