Iroquois Theater Fire Tragedy Shocks Chicago

A catastrophic blaze at the Iroquois Theater during a matinee in Chicago causes massive loss of life with estimates from 620 to 730 dead. Fire, panic, and blocked exits led to many suffocations and fatalities among a crowded audience of women and children. News reports describe the theater as fire proof and momentarily misfiring curtains failing to contain the inferno.

Destructive blaze destroys St. John's Catholic school

A major fire gutted the interior of St. John's Catholic school in the city on Wednesday afternoon, sparing front rooms but damaging them severely. Firemen fought dense smoke and flames from a northwest furnace area, keeping the blaze contained until about 7 pm. Damages are estimated around 6000 dollars with 4000 dollars of building insurance and 1000 dollars for furniture. The cause is undetermined though spontaneous combustion of packed sawdust near water pipes is suspected. The explosion blew out windows and lightly injured several by flying glass.

Wisconsin Guard Company A Ranks Eighth in State Standings

Report on Wisconsin National Guard standings released shows Company A Second Regiment of the city scoring 181.7 points, eighth among state units and fifth in the Second Regiment. Drill place ranks fifth statewide. the Second Regiment supplies five of the top ten. Future legislation may provide pay for members and a clothing fund to improve uniforms. Armory drills begin January 10 with squad divisions.

Wenzel to Host Children’s Masquerade at Opera House

The party for Marsh- Reid children will be held tomorrow at the opera house with Gasgper’s orchestra. Lunch at 10, candy for the kids, and a masquerade with prizes for best dressed girl and boy and for the most comic costume.

New Rector for St. Albans

Rev. Dr. William Dafter has accepted a call to St. Albans Episcopal Church in a major city and will begin services this Sunday January 3. He brings years of ministry, plans church growth, and will move with his wife. The church also congratulates on securing Dr. Carter for other charges in the state.
