Pred Wendt and Eli Crotteau display the improved Wendt car coupler with knuckle opener at the Adler building near the opera house. First car to trial will be Upham logging train caboose. all cars currently use the model.
Through Dr Wahle and local citizens Marshfield will host a free four lecture course this winter. Last evening opened the program with well known speakers traveling under the Her George Lecture Association, ensuring no admission charges. Scheduled visitors include John Z White March 5, William Sterling Battis March 19, and Henry H Hardinge April 2.
Mr. M. M. Horn owner of the Neillsville Overall Factory was in town on Friday to discuss moving his operation to this city. He currently runs a small shop with ten workers and plans to form a stock company to fund a larger output, inviting local businessmen to invest if arrangements proceed.
Mrs Mary Griswold died at the home of her son in law and daughter Mr and Mrs E N Dufour Tuesday morning after months of illness. She was born May 19 1826 in Yarmouth Canada and lived in Racine fifty years. The funeral from the Dufours home at two o clock Thursday with Rev Postlethwaite officiating. Surviving are two children E N Dufott and Charles H Griswold. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church and long valued by friends.
The Ladies Bridge Whist club held its final meeting of the season. The losers hosted the winning side at Mrs. E M Deming’s home for a young people’s party and banquet with costumes of boys and girls. Invitations promised a playful roast and feast at five.
E Rosenbaum resigns as manager of Louis Laemle branch store at Park Falls. Eugene Rosenbaum left to take another position in Medford. Park Falls store now managed by Jesse Allman of Plymouth Indiana, brother of Mrs Louis Laemle. Laemle says the store has done good business and aims to increase it next season.
Several ex changes published outside Wood Clark and Marathon counties declare against forming a new country with Marshfield as county seat. They offer no reasons, admit need for better county facilities, and follow a rallying motto as a head knock is seen.
A sentiment survey at Wood, Clark and Marathon counties shows strong opposition to forming a new county with Marshfield as seat. Officials say if a bill had been pushed, a costly fight would have ensued, harming relations with neighboring towns. Supporters feel disappointed but concede political obstacles are insurmountable now.
Notes of interest indicate Valentine Day on Thursday Feb 14 and Washingtons birthday on Friday Feb 22. William Jennings Bryan to lecture at Neillsville on Feb 14 evening. Ash Wednesday marks Lent with special church services. A double basketball game at the armory on Feb 19 features Marshfield High vs Neillsville High and Company A versus University of Nebraska.
A rural resident asked a local merchant the price of black fox skins. The merchant said price would depend on skin quality. The farmer hinted he would bring the pelt if he killed a fox next week, reflecting the era’s busy labor mindset.
A copper mine has been found on the 5. M. and P. road about forty miles north of Stanley. It is being equipped with hoisting machinery and pumps. Trial assays show paying ore percentages and promoters expect a rich vein. The venture is controlled by Stanley and Thorp businessmen and will be developed on a large scale. Also noted is the Dancy district drainage case heard in Wausau with expert witness Robert Connor testifying on timber and transport feasibility.
An express Wisconsin Central northbound train No. 5 derailed one mile north of Black Wolf at 3 pm, plunging six cars into a ditch. Fifty passengers were injured by flying glass and wreckage. mail clerk W E Gough and express messenger were hurt. Locomotive 265, Engineer Otter and Fireman Hanson led the train. Conductor Whitney and flagman Hugh Emmet were aboard. Premium warrants from the Central Wisconsin State Fair were left at First National Bank for collection.
