Death by Gas Fumes Claims Karburg Family in Grand Rapids
Mathilda Karburg and her daughter Lydia die from gas fumes in their home in Grand Rapids. The father, a local resident, died earlier in the afternoon as he slept near a heater. Missing in action sergeant from Co A in Mexico border action
Mr and Mrs Gior of Ninth Street received a government notice that their son Sergeant Ernest Miller of Co A 127 Infantry is missing in action. A conflicting letter from Roy Whidmann says Miller is dead but gives no cause. Miller, formerly of Marshfield Hardware and Auto Co, served with Co A on the Mexican border and Pico deployment. he has two sisters, Mrs Reed and Miss Josephine Miller.

Auto Driver Convicted in Fourth Degree Manslaughter Trial
Gladwyn Mularkey was found guilty of fourth degree manslaughter for the Ridge road collision that killed Dan Mathews on October 1918. The Neillsville circuit court heard testimony from multiple witnesses as District Attorney Bush led the state’s case and E W Crosby defended Mularkey.

Supposed Murderer Captured at Pittsville
Two of three prisoners who escaped from the county jail at Neillsville last week were recaptured at Pittsville. They entered N Baum’s store and Al Smith’s saloon before being observed by locals who reported the escapees drank heavily. They attempted to force open a safe with crow bars but failed, then fled at dawn. Erickson of Pittsville found the two prisoners in a barn loft next morning. One prisoner identified as Thomas Wilson, former Neillsville murder suspect, and Francis Dodge of Manistique Mich., 16, previously held for larceny, are now in the Clark County jail at Neillsville.

Clark County Banker dies after operation in St Josephs hospital
Charving A. Cornelius of Neilsville died Wednesday afternoon December 1 at St Josephs hospital following bowel operation. A Clark county pioneer since 1876 he served as register of deeds from 1896 to 1908 and founded the First National Bank of Neilsville in 1909 where he was president. He was a member of several fraternal and Masonic organizations. The funeral was held from the family home on Sunday.

Funeral services are set for Thursday morning December 19 at Sacred Heart Church with Rev Father Stehling officiating. Ed Payne Loses Right Arm In City Railroad Accident
Fireman Ed Payne, of 89 South Central Avenue, lost his right arm Saturday night after being struck by an engine at the Northwestern crossing on South Central Avenue. He was en route to meet his son Paul Payne, arriving on the Omaha from Merrilan, and was taken to hospital where the arm was amputated above the elbow.

Private Mike Wellner, a Marshfield teenager, arrived home Sunday night after twelve months overseas. He left France November 11 and traveled back with 300 wounded soldiers aboard the George Washington. Welner was wounded in the Chateau Thierry battle and again later, losing the third finger of his left hand. he was unconscious for three hours. He reports to Camp Dodge, Indiana, for an extension furlough next Thursday.
