Great Fair Opens With Racing Ostrich At Marshfield

Marshfield prepares for a record fair with attractions including the racing ostrich, balloons, and a long list of shows. Beloved Belmont sisters with a balloon, a vast livestock exhibit, and the central industrial parade promise a grand event. Thirty plus horse entries fill the races under renowned local drivers and owners.

Traveling Men Defeated by Local Businessmen 10 to 8

The traveling men lost 10 to 8 to a local businessmen’s team in a best of season game. Key fielding by Jackson and Hass and timely hitting by Kailans White and Carney highlighted the win for the locals. Kailans drove in a bases loaded three bagger, Seuberti made two dramatic catches, and Quinn pitched strong late for the travelers.

Turtle Identified as Beebee’s Long-Lost Pet

The large turtle captured by John Felter on the Little Eau Pleine river has been identified as a former pet of A. I. Beebee of McMillan. Beebee, having settled in McMillan about eighteen years ago, found a turtle with his initials carved on its back, kept it in a water barrel, and it later vanished. The now-deceased turtle weighed over forty pounds and bore Beebee’s initials for almost eighteen years.

Return From the West Conductor and Family Return Home

Conductor and Mrs J H Burns and daughter Miss Agnes returned Saturday afternoon from a five week trip through the west. They visited Mr and Mrs John Voelker and Miss Olive Voelker at Moscow Idaho where the former runs a large mercantile establishment, saw Pete Tallant at Tacoma, and spent several days with Edw L Reese at Denver. They enjoyed the visit but were glad to return to Marshfield.

Big Desi In Livestock Trade Between Farmers

Hiram F Below and C J Morrison swapped a flock of sixty Angora goats for purebred and grade Guernsey cattle from the Morrison strain. Morrison uses goats for clearing pasture while Belew plans broad Guernsey cattle farming.

Schools Open Monday for Fall Term With New Teachers

City schools resume Monday morning with a full staff of experienced teachers and a large enrollment. Several vacancies were filled after resignations, and buildings receive upgrades including a finishing closet system, repaired sidewalks, minor repairs, and overhauled heating. Principal D C Gile leads with C W Otto and Florence Pierce among staff. list includes many names across academic and domestic science departments.

Change in Divisions at Chicago North Western System

The Chicago and North Western plans to separate the Ashland division from its system on September 1. Workers on both divisions are choosing where to remain. Superintendent G J Quigley will likely stay with Ashland and Superintendent Andrews will head the Lake Shore division in Green Bay. The split will require reassigning several train crews once electrification occurs.

Pittsville Odd Fellows Lodge Marks 20th Birthday

Pittsville lodge No 28 observed its twentieth anniversary last Saturday August 24 with a picnic dinner in the bowery at noon followed by 2 pm exercises and a program. Grand Marshal L E Calvin, a Pittsville lodge member, attended and spoke to the gathering.

Neenah factory inspector J. R. Bloom surveyed local industries last week and praised Marshfeld mills for good condition. He noted the city electric light and waterworks power house and equipment as the state's finest Swest plant of its size and kind.

Marriage Announcement for Edith Donelley and Edgar Viele

Cards in the city last Friday announced the marriage of Miss Edith Marie Donelley to Edgar Harris Viele of Wausau. The ceremony will be at St James Catholic Church in Wausau on Tuesday September 3 at nine o clock in the morning. The groom is well known in the city and is a son of Engineer George Viele and is a billing clerk at Northwestern station in Waysan.

Fire at Northwestern depot sparks roof hole

A Thursday fire at the Northwestern depot burned through the roof before extinguishment. The blaze started from sparks from a passing engine, and a bucket brigade quickly stopped it. The incident left the old structure damaged but not destroyed.
