Edwin Kohl Wins National Prize for 1910 Subscriptions

Edwin Kohl of this city, University of Wisconsin student, won Curtis Publishing Co.’s top national prize of 650 dollars for 1910. He built 1170 subscriptions to Ladies Home Journal and Saturday Evening Post in six weeks, amid a large Wisconsin-Illinois lake region network. He will defend in August and plans a short home vacation before returning to Madison as assistant business manager of the Daily Cardinal.

Railway Activity At Spencer Wisconsin

Spencer Wisconsin August 23 Spencer reports a busy railway scene as roadmaster Baker and a large crew move the main track and lower the road bed by about two and a half feet. A new up to date depot will be built west and north of the current site with a concrete platform extending from Clark street to the water tank and across the tracks to a covered transfer platform. The next two months promise many changes in railroad affairs and material orders draw attention.

Grand Rapids Day at Marshfield Fair

The Grand Rapids community plans to attend Marshfield Fair on Friday August 29 with a full day program. The Grand Rapids band is engaged and the local baseball team plays at 12:30 AM. A special six or seven coach train departs at 6 AM on the Chicago North Western line, returning at 11 PM for a full day of attractions in Marshfield.

Banks Close for Fair and Holidays in City

City banks will close Wednesday through Friday afternoons this week due to the fair. Additional closures include Labor Day on September 3 and Primary election day on September 6.

Neenah land agent Martin Peterson was robbed on Soo line passenger No 3 as it pulled from Neenah at 2 38 a m last Thursday. A large man seized him, a smaller man searched his pockets taking 500 dollars in greenbacks while two others blocked the vestibule exits and escaped into the yard among freight cars.

A reorganization of the Vesper Safety Clevis and Malleable Iron Co has been completed over the past week. New officers named include M. Earhart as president, W. H. Philips as vice president, John Lepien as secretary and treasurer, with A. L. Bartholomew, M. E. Ehrhardt, W. H. Phillips and John Lepien as directors. Prospects for quickly launching the plant are described as excellent.

Special Car for Fair Visitors on S0C Line

Agent W L Atwood secures a special service on the S0C line for fair week. A passenger coach will be held Wednesday Thursday and Friday until 6 pm and then carried to Stevens Point by train No 38.
