Chief Yougan seeks vengeance after raids on white settlements, attacking a Virginian buffalo man and abducting his wife, with a dozen armed neighbors pursuing through rough terrain as dawn reveals the pursuit and ambush.
A vivid 1840s passenger tale unfolds with a shipping steward accused of wool smuggling by a stern inspector. The account then shifts to a Moorish festival at Algiers with Ben-Aissa zealots, drums, fire, live serpents, and self-mortification, culminating in a horrifying spectacle witnessed by Bou-Chama and the narrator.
In a Yukon era battle on the Ohio riverbank, Lualla and Yougan flee by canoe pursued by five white men. A volley mortally wounds Yougan. Lualla, guiding the craft, is wounded but survives as the canoe sinks. The last of Yougan’s tribe and Lualla’s prophetic line fade as remnants scatter westward.
In Spirit of the Times a tale from a maritime port recounts a new customs inspector misled by an experienced colleague who tempts him with a plaster load from a Nova Scotia vessel. The innocent oversight leads to a geometry lesson and cautionary demotion.
