West End Drain Proposal Faces City Opposition

The West End drain plan runs from the marsh north of Verona road to Kalamazoo river, laid out by Drain Commissioner J H Labertean. City officials oppose the 50 percent city share citing unfair burden. 60 percent total city cost split 30 percent public health and 20 percent highways. A city committee was formed to study the merits, noting health benefits unseen and arguing Verona road and State street crossings gain little from the drain. Meeting minutes recount budget votes, sidewalk repairs, pavement width changes, and drainage committee actions.

A Gay Deceiver Takes Jewelry Then Flees City

An Ann Arbor born barber named Frank Osborne came to Marshall and befriended a local young woman. He borrowed three rings and a gold watch and chain valued at $40, then left on the same day for Chicago after riding with his companion. The girl has not pressed charges and Osbourne left a $6 unpaid horse bill at Johnson’s stables. The Marshall circuit court opened with Judge Booker and disposed of several cases including burglaries and larcenies with guilty verdicts and continued actions. The Statesman notes its 44th volume, new Campbell press, and rising circulation as it reflects on past achievements and future prospects.

Statesman grows to eight pages and expands news network

The Herald notes the Statesman enlarging from four to eight pages printed at home and adopting a correspondent system later adopted by others. It cites praise from multiple papers, calls the Statesman one of southern Michigan’s oldest country weeklies, and records a September 11, 1883 school board meeting with officers elected and building plans discussed, plus various ads and notices.
