Prentice v Board of Supervisors water costs contested
In the eircvit court case Alonza K Prentice versus the county board the ex sheriff lost and must pay costs. Prentice sought mandamus to compel the board to cover city water contracted for in the jail after notice the board would not pay. Judge Smith ruled the board’s subsequent actions cannot affect the case and if Prentice could not afford city water there was no bar to his resignation. A Battle Creek Journal correspondent urges drastic economies and harsher prisoner diet changes, questioning sheriff’s pay and claiming water and food costs must be trimmed, while noting vegetarians are not in the majority on county boards.
