The China Visit of Mr Webster at Canton 1844
In a crowded Tabernacle audience the speaker described the U S Legation voyage to Macao near Canton on Feb 2 1844. He outlined Macau’s fortifications and the balance of power across Chinese ports and sovereignty, noting Chinese customs, religion and governance, and explaining the vast Chinese empire with its provinces and strict imperial authority.
