England Experiments on Thirty Six Pounder Armor Piercing Shells

A series of tests in England examined velocity, armor penetration, and plate thickness for a thirty six pounder shell. Results show that at 2,600 yards a mild steel plate three inches thick was penetrated at 1,076 feet per second, at 1,000 yards a four inch hard steel plate fell to 1,537 feet per second, and at 500 yards a five inch hard steel plate was breached at 1,748 feet per second. The second experiment found the shell could penetrate a three inch mild steel plate at a certain angle, indicating armor effectiveness depends on angle of impact.
