The Boston advertiser prints an early telecommunication experiment by Alexander Graham Bell and Thomas Watson conducted on the evening of the 9th. Using telephones at opposite ends of a two mile Walworth Manufacturing line from Boston to Cambridge, the pair carried on a conversation once faint and indistinct, then clear. Notes logged by Bell in Boston and Watson in Cambridgeport show the transmission was nearly perfect. The test lasted about a half hour in normal speech and whispers. Credit for the discovery is attributed to Bell.
The Telegraph in Africa reports a plan to lay a wire spanning the continent for the expo. Telegraphic communication already runs from Alexandria to Khartoum, about 1,200 miles, with surveys extending to Mondekero and Delagoa Bay, where South African lines end. the project would shorten routes by roughly 8,600 miles compared with other continental lines.
From Mexico comes word that Porfirio Diaz, rival of President Lerdo, arranged a $50,000 loan with installments of 25 percent. Lenders expected failure, but Diaz paid the entire sum upfront to liquidate. Critics say the repayment trick may aid a larger future loan, a curious episode in Mexican revolutionary history noted by the New York Sun.
