A Havana visitor, J. Hanchez Seniga, relays details of an April Cuban expedition led by Gen. Lopez. The force landed near Cardenas after leaving Yucatan, attacked a jail believed to be a barracks, and burned the house of a local target amid street fighting. Spanish defenders and a Pizarro steamer engagement disrupted the attackers, who retreated toward Key West. Lopez’s force reportedly grew with Cuban volunteers, and loot from Cardenas included about $51,000 in specie.
