Fires of 11 Die as Northwest Forest Fire Rages Near Lake City

In Michigan territory northwest of the city, forest fires surrounding Louis Sands lumber yard near Lake City caused a deadly blaze. Eleven men died after being trapped by smoke and flames as they attempted to escape from a burning building. Eight men sought safety in a well but were overcome as the top burned and timbers collapsed. The names of the deceased include Samuel Campbell and John Hill among others. The disaster underscored a broader fire outbreak with extensive property damage and displacement in nearby Saginaw, where a separate fire left seven hundred fifty homes destroyed or threatened and led to a large insurance deficit and mass aid effort as authorities urged rapid rebuilding and local volunteers organized relief.
