Temperance drive shakes Plainfield to its core
In Plainfield a powerful temperance wave halted business, drew 2200 residents to sign a pledge against alcohol, and sparked a reform club led by Mabee and English. The revival drew crowds of 500 to 600 nightly, closed saloons, and reshaped licenses with many barrooms relocating or remodeling. Prominent converts include businessmen, judges, and clergymen, while skepticism lingered among liquor dealers and some citizens.
