Virginia Election Results Boost Whig Hopes In 1847
The Virginia polls indicate a Whig gain in Congress and state seats, with six or seven representatives likely Whig in the House and a strong joint-ballot tie anticipated. Kent County towns show eight Whig supervisors elected amid broader optimism for Whig redemption in the Grand River Valley. The death of Virginia Democrat Daontaoone in Congress prompts a special election, while measures note ice clearance on the Mackinac Straits enabling uninterrupted lake navigation and flour and wheat price shifts in Detroit and New York markets. A Detroit Advertiser tribute card praises Captain Corres of the boat Laker and its officers for safe, entertaining service on the first trip of the season.
