A critical editorial argues the federal postal service declined under Democratic control and suggests changes to restore efficiency. It cites A. Jackson and various figures, notes political battles, and discusses the impact on public service, government reform, and party power in the late 19th century. The piece references the House rules, the new department leadership, and upcoming political shifts with Harrison era framing.
The piece discusses global political shifts and naval power, with focus on Britain and China, and notes on the St. Mary's Falls Canal. It analyzes the impact of inland routes on ocean commerce, particularly effects on New York and Great Lakes traffic. It mentions vessels through Suez and St. Marys, and the role of the Canadian Pacific expansion on freight rates and regional trade dynamics.
Probate and estate matters adjourned to March and April include courts handling will admissions, commissions for partition, hearings on claims, and final accounts. Notable names include Ayla Viwuian, John Seabolt, Maury M. Lee, Wan Vionry, Alfred Clark, Mary M. Lev, Hiram Crane, Ebenezer Jackson, and Christian Vogt amid petitions for administrators, guardians, and adoptions.
At Lexington Kentucky during the three weeks ending March 2, breeders and buyers watched Kentucky Prince 2474 lead a sale of five stallions and a brood mare as great trotting stock from the Bluegrass region drew strong prices. The chestnut Kentuck Prince’s bloodline includes Kentuck Prince 2474 and Mamble taenia line, with multiple offspring racing to 2:29 and faster. Dickey and Brastfold & Co. reported solid entries, while buyers considered the future breeding value of the lot amid continued high demand for premier trotters from Kentucky.
In Calhoun County the Sunday School Association backs a tract by Whitcomb urging national Sunday rest. The piece argues two million+ workers including 100000 postal employees lack Sabbath rest, calling for concerted public agitation and a Congressional act to protect the day, citing Toronto and London as precedents. It stresses constitutional rights, moral duty, and practical limits to exceptions.
In defense of Sunday rest, the article argues the Sabbath must be preserved amid a secular national government. It notes support from labor groups and religious denominations, opposition from Adventists and Seventh Day Baptists, and discusses an exemption amendment to Blair Bill, urging respect for conscience and the nation’s religious heritage.
