Death of Kenneth Rayner in National Hotel
The Hon. Kenneth Rayner, Solicitor of the Treasury, died at the National Hotel yesterday afternoon. Born in Bertie County, North Carolina, in 1808, he served in the North Carolina Legislature, represented the state in Congress from 1839 to 1845, and was later appointed Solicitor of the Treasury by President Hayes on June 30, 1877. He received fourteen votes at the Know-Nothing convention in 1856, with Millard Fillmore receiving 179 votes.

The Kennedy Prohibition bill passed the House 42 to 41 with Democratic and Greenback opposition. Curtis ill. Senate approved 33 to 11 and the governor signed it. The bill repeals sections redefining intoxicants to include alcohol and liquor and bans manufacture sale or keeping for sale of all intoxicating liquors with penalties.
