An eye witness recounts a March 1843 scene in Vienna where Emperor Alexander I feigns misrecognition of a young Navy officer delivering despatches. The officer, mistaken for the Emperor of Russia, is charmingly engaged by Frederick William and the Prussian king, leading to a lighthearted promenade, drinks, and a mock toast before the ruse ends with the officer exposed as a dupe of a diplomatic prank.

It mentions a patent marble cement by Keene and a plaster mix with alum that imitates veined marble yet lacks weather resistance. A Virginia sign-story about a tannery owner using a calf tail to attract attention ends with a quip about philosophical passersby.
