Aleck Van Araden the notary of Calhoun county
A clipped Detroit Chair tale recounts Aleck Van Araden, a famed cunning lawyer from Calhoun county, who rose from farm work to study law, and who famously defended a Jimson woman in a sensational arsenic poisoning case by eating a biscuit in court to discredit the prosecution. The narrator questions the tale's truth but preserves the local legend of Van Araden's wit and courtroom nerve.
