Allegan Whigs Form Clay Club in 1844 Meeting
In Allegan on April 15 1844 a Clay Club organized with Henry H Booth as chair and Edward B Wilder as secretary. A five member committee drafted resolutions and a constitution. Resolutions pledge Whig adherence to Harrison era principles, support Henry Clay for president, critique Locofoco policy, and demand protection for farmers and manufacturers. The men quote Andrew Jackson on populist sentiment.
