Oregon Volunteers Kill Modace Captives at Fairchild Ranch
A frontier incident reports John James Fairchild leading about a dozen men from Fairchild's Ranch at Cottonwood Creek with seventeen Modoc captives. At Lost River a clash with Oregon volunteers under Capt. Hiser ends with the murder of several captives, including Little John’s equaw wounded, and Fairchild and a teamster wounded. News of the atrocity provokes condemnation in San Francisco as troops pursue the dead.
