Death on the Rail at Michigan Central Crossing
A fatal accident at the Michigan Central crossing on Kalamazoo Avenue last Saturday afternoon left Chas Beeler of Fredonia dead after his wagon was struck by the day express. Flagman John Hanchon attempted to stop the team but was run down. Beeler and one horse died, the other horse and wagon were wrecked. Beeler, about 40, left seven children and a paid-for farm, and questions arise over train speed and fault. The flagman acted to warn and protect the public, and his actions drew praise from officials. liability for damages remains debated amid speed concerns.
