Fire disables Western Union building in New York
A catastrophic blaze swept the eleven story Western Union building in New York on a Friday morning. Operators and staff, about seventy people, were trapped and many fled to the roof where they were rescued by firemen. The fire, slow to reach from the lower floors, destroyed the upper offices including the Associated Press and Western Union rooms, with estimates of $3,000,000 in losses. Fear rose for lives amid high flames and delayed alarms. three hours later the blaze was under control though despite rescues, substantial damage and communication outages persisted.
