Fostered civic duty over private ties urges support for Taylor
A National Intelligencer letter from June 15, 1848 appeals to Whigs to sacrifice personal preferences to restore the Constitution under General Zachary Taylor. It praises Taylor as honest, constitutionally faithful, and restraint on veto power, arguing his election would return government to the rule of law. The piece stresses compromise as essential to reform and cites historical concessions that shaped the American system.

Singapore Town by the Sea and Its Diverse Citizens
From the anchorage the town of Singapore presents a pleasing sea view with public buildings and merchant houses facing the coast. The church sits near the beach for sea breeze access, a plain building with a spiral steeple and a large organ filled with young choristers. The western side hosts stone merchant houses and busy commerce among Armenians, Jews, Chinese, and Indians living in distinct quarters, creating a carnival-like scene of varied costumes. Palanquins on four wheels, drawn by one horse, carry four passengers as conductors and Sícegeh move beside the horses. Two rival hotels, English and French, attract guests, with the French house favored for carpeted surroundings and sea views. The governor’s house sits atop Government Hill, a distant prospect with a view of the broad expanse toward the sea.
