Fatal fire at East Nervania Insane Asylum ward

A detached ward of the Eastnia Insane Asylum burned in the early hours, killing thirteen patients and wounding others. Fire started in the furnace room, with flames racing through pine floors. inadequate fire protection and delayed alarm hampered rescue efforts. Attendants saved many, but most patients failed to escape. superintendent Dewey blamed insufficient funding for fire protection and reported the loss of life and property.

Emigration from South Carolina to Western States Increases
