The Absurd Blues Manuscript and the Mountain Author
Gregory returns home to Cornelia Van Tasel and a family enthralled by a mysterious young author Rose Bud who wrote a mountain tale. He admires the book and contemplates whether Rose Bud is the woman he loves, while Cornelia and sisters discuss fashion and fame. The village buzzes about talent, identity, and romantic destiny.

Fragmentary sentence hints at Cornelia’s hold over him
A distracted narrative fragment describes a man under Cornelia’s influence for a week. The text hints at preparations to reunite two figures and an evolving, blurred vision of rooms and scenes, suggesting an intimate, unsettled episode without full context.

Family confidences and a Texan visitor arrive
Gregory meets Texan Mr. La Monte from Texas, a friend of the Bud family, seeking reconciliation after months of strain with his father. The elder Blanchard remains cautious while hosting the surprising guest who appears as a herald of a new bond. The scene blends domestic drama with faded ads for tonics and patent medicines.
