The New York Sun highlights a December Century article titled The Private History of a Campaign that Failed by Mark Twain, running as a contemporaneous supplement to Grant memoirs. It notes Grant’s shaken awe before Palmyra’s encounter and Twain’s reaction, contrasting their attitudes to war. The piece previews Gen Desarsgard’s Shiloh campaign history in the January North American Review and debates whether Beecher or Besuregard held command on both Shiloh days.
