A large, bright gathering at Baart Hall celebrated the formal opening with a long banquet and toasts. Speakers praised Mareball, Fr. Baart, and the Sisters of St. Mary, while Miss Winifred Amy and actors from Chicago offered performances. The hall, funded by Fr. Beart’s book sales, stands as a memorial to community effort and local pride.
Jackson residents discuss appealing the Homer injunction ruling. A meeting at the village office with trustees and Taxpayers, led by Thomas E. Buarkworth, votes to take the bonding question to the Supreme Court to decide if a municipal body's completed action can be impeached. The issue remains largely undecided.
Prof R B Moulton may deliver three additional lectures on Bible study at the Baptist church in Marshall. The Extension committee will fund the lectures using a $30 surplus to reduce ticket prices to 50 cents for Extension holders and 75 cents for others. Subjects include The Bible as a Story Book and Recital of Job. attendance is optional and advance names are urged to Supt. Lobr for financial feasibility.
Senator Goodell pushes a bill to regulate sale of concentrated feeding stuffs including linseed meal gluten meal and maize with printed labels showing net pounds brand name manufacturer address and protein and fat content. Offenders face up to 100 dollars for a first offense and 200 dollars for a second.
Will Scott, engineer, perished in a wreck reported by the Evening Telegram of Portland Oregon. He was brother of Mrs. W. H. Elston formerly of this city and well known in Eckford. The dispatch calls him a brave and faithful Portland figure.
The Marshall Industrial Association held its second meeting at Arbeiter hall on Friday evening. Fr Baart read the by laws report which the group adopted. Advisory committee members were J T Mack James Grace M S OKeefe L O Miller P A Baart. Finance committee members Aptone Wyeler Jobn Powell J J DeShane W J Noneman J M Hatch. Membership officers reported broad willingness to enroll new members and dues were left voluntary. The next meeting is set for February 20.
A one day Farmers Institute will meet at the Burlington Methodist church Tuesday with L. M. Oviatt of North Williams as state speaker. Special music by the Burlington Glee Club. Officers: F. B. Garrett president and Lillian A. Reid secretary. Morning and afternoon sessions feature papers, discussions, and demonstrations on topics including Weeds, Farm Fertility, and farmer wives education with musical interludes and a question box for farmers.
Probate calendar outlines hearings and licenses for multiple estates. Feb 11 includes license to sell real estate for Ann Eliza Young and Betsey Hadwin and Henry Hughes estates. The fourth annual banquet of the Lincoln Republican club of Calhoun county will be held Tuesday in Homer. Officers will be elected at 3:30 p.m. at Firemen's hall. A banquet follows at 7 p.m. at the Methodist church with Gov. Bliss as a speaker and A. D. Bangham as toastmaster. The program includes topics on Michigan, the judiciary, Abraham Lincoln, the Philippines, and the moral element in politics. An orchestra will perform and transportation is arranged by a special train from Battle Creek via CO N R E, stopping at Marshall and Hokford. A large countywide attendance is expected.
Effort underway to restart the Hurd flooring mill in Marshall after months idle. J B Stevens, owner, says shutdown last spring came from inability to secure milling and transit rates from railroads. Concessions granted, boosting hope the mill will soon operate with smoke from the chimney and machinery humming again.
The February term of the circuit court opens Monday with one of the smallest dockets in memory. There are 59 cases total, including 10 criminal and 16 jury actions, 16 chancery matters of which 7 are divorces, and 4 impatience. Next week focuses on chancery dispositions and a jury session on Feb. 18. Notable criminal cases include false pretenses and embezzlement by A O Hyde, liquor law violations, larceny from persons, burglary, game law violations, water pollution by bathing in Gogaug lake, and appeals from justice court.
A report notes a reckless driver named G. & Beat, driving the 109s, struck a valuable horse at a boree event held in the evening. Hd. Clark is mentioned in connection with the incident.
Obituary recalls Ozem Merrifield Easterly born June 16 1824 in Scipio New York and long time Michigan farmer. He built a prosperous life in Fredonia Calhoun County supported by family faith and public service, helped neighbors and children, and united with the Baptist church at seventeen before later joining the Congregational faith. The service was led by Rev Hamilton in Marshall with many relatives present, and mourners recall his hospitality generosity and dedication to community welfare. His death closes a half century as a familiar local figure amid farm life, church and civic work. We extend thanks for condolences and support from Fredonia friends and relatives.
The Wednesday whist club was hosted by Mrs F J Marshall. Ustawegnes met at Mr and Mrs Stephen Snyder with prizes won by F W Dickey and Mrs Snyder. Mrs F G Powers will discuss Evolution at the Drummond Circle on Monday evening. Mr and Mrs F N Wright host the Circle. W C T U meets Wednesday at 2 30 pm at temperance rooms. A salad contest and bake sale for fund at the W C T U rooms Saturday Feb 9 with entries due by 1 pm and judging by 2 pm. Donations of bread and cake welcomed. Admission five cents. refreshments free. Bring friends.
