Archaeologists, led by Rev J E Gass and L S Wilrodt, uncover shale tablets with carved scenes near Cook’s Point on the Mississippi River. Captain and crew of the bark Pauline declare before the Liverpool magistrate that on July 8 1875 in latitude 5 deg 13 min south longitude 35 deg west they saw three large sperm whales and one was gripped by a huge serpent around its body with two turns. The serpent dragged the whale head first for about fifteen minutes. On July 18 another serpent surfaced about 200 yards off and wheeled its body above the water for several feet. The declaration was signed in Liverpool January 10 1877 by the master and crew members Horatio Thompson Owen Baker William LeWArD and others.
