A Marshall writer denounces a stagnant town bent to be ruled by few “kick ers,” warns of exodus for vice, and rails at changing church attitudes toward cards and dancing. He mocks frontier nostalgia, notes rogues and frauds, and recalls local figures debating street openings and leap year party etiquette.
Albert J. Carpenter, a Grand Trunk brakeman and former Marshall resident, was shot and killed in Frank Boos saloon by Cao McCarthy, a fellow railroad man. The incident, ruled accidental, involved liquor influence and a self cocking revolver. McCarthy surrendered. inquest postponed. Carpenter, about 22, unmarried, was step son of Wink Carpenter of Marshall.
At Friday dusk Mrs. John Livingston, near the cemetery, leapt into the waters from a break in the old flume by the C J M track on Marshall Avenue. Frigid currents swept her under but she cried for help as Frank Chui and the Finher family from Perrinville pulled her to shore. The woman’s behavior hinted at a personal crisis, though she appeared to recover.
The Chronicle reports alarming municipal finance notes though Treasury Whalen provides figures. Expenditures totaled 24089.52 in 1887 with 4270.58 on 1869 orders and 5000 to Rogerton Bros. Banks hold debts around 6000 at First National and about 1400 at National ity bank. Total near 7000. authorities caution against panic yet question city health.
