Miss Hulia Eberhardt died after mistaking gasoline for kerosene and trying to start a fire. Her clothing ignited and despite effort, she died at Mercy Hospital. Carl Salent suffered severe burns while attempting to quell the blaze but is expected to recover.
New York dispatch reports that former President Roosevelt refused to attend a large peace dinner linked to the ratification of treaties with England and France. Roosevelt called invitations “traitorous” to those who accepted without agreeing with the dinner’s aims. The event, led by the National Citizens committee, planned for Saturday with President Taft as principal speaker and about 1,800 guests, including diplomats from Washington.

Bradley saved Alger and both bodies recovered after about twenty minutes with doctors unable to revive Alger.
Ambrose Pond, who escaped from Jackson prison on November 5, was captured at his parents’ Liberty township residence on December 27 by Sheriff Wood and Deputy Herbst. Convicted of sheep theft on March 1, 1905, he received a sentence of two and a half to dye years. He had wandered northern Michigan since his escape and arrived home to spend Christmas.
