Gov. Pingree released a statement defending three-cent streetcar fares in Detroit. He claims bonds and subsidies yield profits, and that the 1.8 million bond sale would reimburse owners for road construction. He argues a 1.0 million issue was a gift to shareholders, with the people paying interest. The Evening News cites reports the Detroit railway cannot meet bond interest, while claims a Johnson promise to cover shortfalls may be kept.
