The Parson Cole and the May Queen Tale
A fragment from Laytain's Union Magazine recounts Parson Cole a cultured yet eccentric village teacher who runs a private girls’ academy with his wife. The tale follows the May Day pageant where Ellen Saunders wins the Queen’s role after a series of confessions, and the revelation that the tutor Henry Williams is actually Edward Cole. The piece ends with Ellen’s marriage to Edward and a meditation on conjugal fidelity and tragedy.
