Washington Territory views and dreams for New Tacoma

Dr. Gangham writes from Tacoma in 1883 detailing dust, sand bluffs, and danger from landslides near the depot, the Tacoma Land Company’s inflated real estate, and speculation about the city as a future Northern Pacific terminus. He notes coal bunkers, foreign merchants, and a boom mentality amid slim wooden buildings, high prices, and tentative railroad plans, with climate and foggy, wet winters and a lofty Mt. Tacoma visible across Puget Sound.
