Will of Adam G Arnold admitted to probate

The will of Adam G. Arnold of Battle Creek was admitted to probate. He leaves his remaining estate after expenses to the W C T U, requesting restraint on alcohol sales. His dying note pleads innocence and condemns alcohol as the chief ruin of the community. A land road scheme in Marshall Alma and a historic Statesman relic comment follow, highlighting local development and a venerable Marshall hotel.

John B Park Killed In Freight Run Accident

John B Park a veteran C J M freight conductor was killed at Yorkville while attempting to catch the caboose front end. He was crushed and died hours after amputation of a crushed limb. He lived much of his career in railroading and resided at Marshall. His death prompted a large turnout of railroad men to Battle Creek to pay respects. The Statesman also notes a new Negro stage show Darkest America and a high school composite story That Mortgage. An inmate at the county jail caused a smoke incident using a mattress excelling.

Grand May Festival Plan Revealed at Albion Meeting

A quorum of Albion business leaders met at the Leisure Hour club to hear Prof. C. H. Adams outline a grand May Festival to be held late May or early June. A board of directors and advisory group were elected with H. M. Dearing and H. R. Stoepel among members. A five member working committee led by H. K. White Jr. was appointed to finalize festival details as Adams, head of the College Conservatory of Music, negotiates national performers and terms.

Bear Hunt Tales From Calhoun County Patriot 1898

The Calhoun County Patriot recounts a Marshall bear hunt era tale with four bears entering the village. People chased, bricks and clubs used, largest bear measured five feet and weighed 150 pounds. Includes anecdotes of settlers and local balloon ascension notices and notices of land transfers and subscriptions.

Activities included lectures, charity drives, and a curfew bell petition. Community notices cover receipts, library gifts, and jail book placement.
